About

Welcome!   I started this blog shortly after becoming an unexpected widow in my 40’s in 2009.  I took a leap and bought a small homestead with the tiny bit of savings that I had.   Things have changed a lot and I no longer have my little piece of heaven due to work issues.  Perhaps again one day.  For now, just taking things as they develop, but I’d love to be back in the country, practicing self-sufficiency once again.  I simply don’t know what roads I’ll travel before I get back to that marvelous feeling again.

I am an avid reader, an aspiring writer, an amateur photographer, and a dilettante.  As such, while I write mostly in essay format, sometimes I will also showcase my photography, promote other bloggers, and introduce music.

E.B.White wrote:

“A writer should concern himself with whatever absorbs his fancy, stirs his heart, and unlimbers his typewriter…. a writer has the duty to be good, not lousy; true, not false; lively, not dull; accurate, not full of error. He should tend to lift people up, not lower them down. Writers do not merely reflect and interpret life, they inform and shape life.”

Of course, White also said that essayists are the greatest egoists in the writing world, because we think our commentary on the minutia of life is of import to others… I leave that to you, the reader, to decide.

Because I write from so many different perspectives, having survived and thrived after many traumas, I truly hope to lift others up.  That my readers will try on a new perspective. And most of all, I hope that you will return time and again, because you find value, humor, and thoughtful writing, straight from my heart to yours.

*** Appended 2019:

I became a traveler in 2019, leaving my sticks and bricks home behind, and living on the road. I started in a conversion van, and now travel in a short schoolie.

I still live in Florida, but I have a place near Paris that I hunt every year. I have an IT job also that I travel and that allows me to spend time up there during the year. I would like to move up there some day. Love your writing!

Just a quick message to say thanks for following my blog. Today I reached 300 followers. i know that’s not much of a milestone for most bloggers, but I really do appreciate every single person who appreciates something about my photos or thoughts enough to follow my blog.

Thank you for stopping by. I really enjoy reading what goes on in your shoots, your feelings, the curiosity behind the shots when you are out and about. And I can certainly relate to your ups and downs about following your dreams. I am there with my own creative work. You gave me a push of hope this morning.

I can’t wait to see what you and your wife do once back in Oz! Thank you for allowing us ‘behind the scenes’.

Isn’t that how our journeys begin. A need, a yearning, and a dream? Good luck along the way.

Yes, so true. And often the detours, potholes and unexpected, frustrating flats teach us more about ourselves than the longed for destination, creating a more receptive and resilient frame of mind. Thank you for stopping by, as I admire your work.

Wow, what an introduction! I was sad to read you are a widow, especially in your 40’s. It hardly seems fair at all. However, I very much admire you for using this, as well as other traumas you have experienced, in your writing. I truly believe those darker times bring out the best in our writing. I also believe writing is hugely therapeutic! It had helped me, and I’m sure it has helped you.

I really hope you find that happy place you speak of. It seems like you have been on a pretty bumpy road!

Changing topic, I see you enjoy photography, too. 🙂

All the very best to you!

I found you after another blogger (a nice lady from Barbados) had reblogged something of yours on her site. She visited my blog first and when I returned her “visit” I read the reblog and ended up here – long story cut short. Anyways, I liked that quote from EB White, and your About description. I, too, live in the City and long to return to the peace and quiet of “country” living. In the meantime, I’m preparing for that move in little ways. I’m looking forward to reading more of your blog. Have a wonderful weekend. Regards, Mary

I read your About. I shall give it my all as I try to keep up with the writings of others. I do journal, but, as Thoreau wrote, “many things have been omitted which should have been recorded. . . . It is not easy to write in a journal what interests us at any time, because to write it is not what interests us” (Thoreau). Stop by and look at my site. Thank you.

Yes, I’ve journaled for years, since about…thirteen maybe? Torn up and destroyed many a journal over the years. One of my long-time goals is to acquire the full journals of Thoreau…! It is difficult to keep up with everything, so drop by when you can, and thanks for the read. I’ll check out your blog as well.

I have just seen this, its New Years Day 2019 at nearly 7 pm here in England. I too became a Widow in my 40 s in 1994, I had two young Sons still to bring up and it was hard especially as other complications caused us so much pain to our little Family. Its a few years now since I started writing Blogs but have always enjoyed writing. As a Loner I found myself drawn to Rod McKuen Poet/Writer and a man whose words would become so meaningful to me. Like you I can only write straight from my Heart, I only know the Truth boring as it may be at times. Yet like Rod McKuen I have to write every day, at times probably like you we just get carried away with our writing. I am pleased to meet you and look forward to your work, wishing you well. Just keep writing.

Thank you for your heartfelt comment, and my condolences for your loss. I’ve taken a year’s (and a bit) more hiatus from writing as the addition of a child to raise sapped me dry. I did some actual physical art instead for a while. But I’m feeling a bit more like writing lately, so maybe some new bits to come.
Write, to your heart’s content, always.
